Buy Green Power

Did you know you can choose what kind of electricity you buy from your electric company? Buying clean and renewable or "green" energy is the single most powerful action a family or business can take to fight pollution and climate disruption. Find out how!

CLEAN is a collaborative movement of organizations and individuals organizing around a specific "CALL TO ACTION."

The "call" is to implement new energy policies based on decentralized control of energy, whereby energy is generated by regionally appropriate, reliable, and renewable resources, such as wind, solar, and geothermal.

Increasing Public Acceptance for Cape Wind Project
Hyannis, MA June 14, 2005 The Cape and Islands NPR stations and the Cape Cod Times yesterday released poll results indicating a "dead heat" in public opinion on the Cape Wind project, marking a clear shift in public opinion in favor of the wind farm.

Winning out against wealthy interests
image According to the survey results, 37% of the residents of the Cape and Islands support the Cape Wind project, 39% are opposed, and 24% had no opinion. The poll, which was condicted in early May, has a margin of error of 4%. "Those figures represent a statistical tie," according to a news story posted on the NPR station's website.

A similar poll conducted by the Times and the NPR station in February of 2004 showed that opponents outnumbered supporters, with 36% in favor, 44% opposed, and 20% undecided. The undecided portion of the poll was not covered by either the Times or NPR in their news stories, but was revealed by a Times reporter who subsequently left the paper (see his story here).

"The results demonstrate a clear shift in public opinion in favor of the wind farm," said Clean Power Now Executive Director Matt Palmer. "This is a great victory for Clean Power Now and grass-roots advocates everywhere," he continued. "Citizens who learn the truth really can win out against wealthy special interests."
Media campaign "neutralized"
The primary wind farm opposition group, the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound, has an advertising, PR, and outreach budget of $540,000 annualy, according to an interview with a staff person in Cape Business magazine. Clean Power Now, by contrast, spent about $35,000 on advertising and outreach during the past 12 months, according to Palmer. The majority of the expenditure was for printing and distribution of 100,000 newspaper inserts last fall.

Cape Wind officials have previously indicated that their advertising, PR, and outreach expenditures have been very modest compared to the opposition group.

"Not only did we neutralize their massive media campaign," said Clean Power Now director Jim Liedell, "but we increased public support for the Cape Wind project at the same time."
