Buy Green Power

Did you know you can choose what kind of electricity you buy from your electric company? Buying clean and renewable or "green" energy is the single most powerful action a family or business can take to fight pollution and climate disruption. Find out how!

CLEAN is a collaborative movement of organizations and individuals organizing around a specific "CALL TO ACTION."

The "call" is to implement new energy policies based on decentralized control of energy, whereby energy is generated by regionally appropriate, reliable, and renewable resources, such as wind, solar, and geothermal.

Hyannis, MA August 17, 2005

This morning, Clean Power Now members turned out in force to protest the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound as they headed out for a cruise of imageNantucket Sound on board the Spirit of Massachusetts with Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.

"We are very disappointed that RFK, Jr., is opposed to the wind farm project," said Executive Director Matt Palmer. "With his environmental record, he should recognize the benefits this project brings, particularly in slowing global warming and reducing mercury contamination of sea life."

Mr. Kennedy was on board the vessel with "50 invited opinion leaders," according to the itinerary obtained from the internet. The Alliance was scheduled to give a presentation on the status of the Cape Wind project.

Major Environmental Organizations Support Cape Wind
Joining in the protest was Greenpeace, who delivered a package to Kennedy out on the Sound. A Clean Power Now sailboat was in the area, also. Many other organizations have submitted comments that are very favorable to the proposed wind farm. "There is no doubt that reductions [in mercury and particulates] will occur and that they will provide important public health benefits," wrote Katherine Kennedy (no relation) in the Natural Resources Defense Council's comments to the Army Corps of Engineers.

Cape Wind "First of Many"
The Cape Wind project is the first offshore wind farm proposed for the United States. In the opinion of Clean Power Now, it will be the first of many offshore wind farms. The US Department of Energy has estimated the potential of offshore wind for the United States at 900,000 megawatts (MW). To put that number in perspective, the current capacity of all of New England is approximately 33,000 MW.

"This project opens the door for significant renewable resource development," said Palmer, "which is one of the reasons it is so important for our region and our nation."

About Clean Power Now
Clean Power Now is a non-profit, volunteer organization that informs and empowers citizens to support viable renewable energy projects and policies and to secure their local and regional benefits. Clean Power Now believes that the timely development of such projects, in conjunction with energy efficiency and conservation, will bring about a clean healthy environment, improved economy and a more secure sustainable America. Their immediate focus is to increase citizen support of offshore wind power in Nantucket Sound.
