Buy Green Power

Did you know you can choose what kind of electricity you buy from your electric company? Buying clean and renewable or "green" energy is the single most powerful action a family or business can take to fight pollution and climate disruption. Find out how!

CLEAN is a collaborative movement of organizations and individuals organizing around a specific "CALL TO ACTION."

The "call" is to implement new energy policies based on decentralized control of energy, whereby energy is generated by regionally appropriate, reliable, and renewable resources, such as wind, solar, and geothermal.

Coalition of Environmental and Labor Groups Urge Leadership

A coalition of environmental and labor groups today called on Congressman Edward Markey and Senator John Kerry to support the Cape Wind clean energy project. At a rally in front of the congressman’s office in Medford, advocates urged Congressman Markey, Senator Kerry, and four other members of the Massachusetts delegation to take a position during the upcoming public hearings on the federal Minerals Management Service draft environmental impact statement on Cape Wind.
“Congressman Markey is chairman of the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming in the Congress,” said Barbara Hill, executive director of Clean Power Now. “He has a unique opportunity to lead the country on the critical issue of clean energy by supporting the first offshore wind project in the United States. As they have on so many important environmental issues in the past, we strongly urge him and Senator Kerry publicly support Cape Wind at next week’s public hearings.”

The clean power advocates delivered over 8,000 signed postcards to Congressman Markey from citizens throughout Massachusetts, urging his leadership on the Cape Wind project. Recent polling shows that the vast majority of Massachusetts residents support the project, including more than 61% on the Cape and Islands.

“The nation is watching and waiting for Congressman Markey and Senator Kerry,” said Fred Schlicher, program manager of the Mass Climate Action Network and a Markey constituent. “We believe that their leadership on Cape Wind will encourage other elected officials to actively support this important project.”

Congressmen Barney Frank, John Olver, Niki Tsongas, and James McGovern support Cape Wind. Congressmen John Tierney, Michael Capuano, Stephen Lynch, and Richard Neal join Senator Kerry and Congressman Markey as those among the Massachusetts delegation who have yet to take a clear position. Senator Edward Kennedy and Congressman William Delahunt oppose the project

“Cape Wind will create hundreds of of jobs and make Massachusetts a leader in offshore renewable energy - an economic sector that will rapidly develop in the years to come,” said Marty Aiken of I.B.E.W. Local 103.

Clean Power Now was joined by the Massachusetts Climate Action Network, Civil Society Institute, Greenpeace, Clean Water Action, Massachusetts Energy Consumers Alliance, I.B.E.W.
