Did you know you can choose what kind of electricity you buy from your electric company? Buying clean and renewable or "green" energy is the single most powerful action a family or business can take to fight pollution and climate disruption. Find out how!
CLEAN is a collaborative movement of organizations and individuals organizing around a specific "CALL TO ACTION."
The "call" is to implement new energy policies based on decentralized control of energy, whereby energy is generated by regionally appropriate, reliable, and renewable resources, such as wind, solar, and geothermal.
Boston, MA - Feb 14, 2005 Students from Boston and the Northeast converged at the State House today to demand a Clean Energy Revolution. The students, along with EnviroCitizen and Clean Power Now, want the revolution to begin here in Massachusetts, with the approval of the Cape Wind Project by the Army Corps of Engineers. Hundreds of letters and postcards gathered by students were presented to various offices and politicians today.
To highlight their support for renewable energy, the students staged a mock battle between a wind turbine and a coal plant stack. After a difficult struggle, the wind turbine finally defeated the coal stack to claim the victory.
Renewable Energy Revolution
Dugan Hayes, an MIT student and Clean Power Now member, spoke out in favor of the wind farm. "I will be proud to have the renewable energy revolution begin in my back yard," he told the assembled students, press and legislative aides. Students were concerned about the effect of global warming on their futures. "It is today's generation of youth that will bear the brunt of climate change impacts, so we need to work now to stop global warming," said Aditya Nochur of Tufts University.
Delivering Letters
The students also attempted to deliver hundreds of letters written by fellow scholars in support of Cape Wind to Governor Romney, but no one from his office came to the event. Several legislative aides were present however, as was Representative Matt Patrick of Falmouth. The conference closed with a quote from Theodore Roosevelt, read by graduate student Kathleen Mikulski of Boston College: "I recognize the right and duty of this generation to develop and use the natural resources of our land; but I do not recognize the right to waste them, or to rob, by wasteful use, the generations that come after us." The students were asking that present policy makers look to the future and approve the Cape Wind project. In a letter, HyunJoo Lee of Boston College said "The pros far outweigh the cons. What are we waiting for? Please do not let us down."
