Report Examines Hidden Health and Environmental Costs Of Energy Production and Consumption In U.S.

A new report from the National Research Council examines and, when possible, estimates "hidden" costs of energy production and use -- such as the damage air pollution imposes on human health -- that are not reflected in market prices of coal, oil, other energy sources, or the electricity and gasoline produced from them......

A carbon tax, not a cap and trade

THE WAXMAN-MARKEY bill on climate change that recently passed the House is a train wreck waiting to happen. Intended to reduce global warming and achieve energy independence, it is totally inadequate in its reliance on a flawed cap and trade system, and the recently released Senate version called the Kerry-Boxer bill follows the same track......

Pioneering Wind Farm Faces Another Delay, This Time Over Indian Sites

New York Times

Final approval for Cape Wind is stalled, aggravating developers of the Massachusetts offshore wind project and igniting concerns that the latest roadblock -- over American Indian ceremonies -- could jeopardize other ocean-based energy proposals.

The 130-turbine project appeared to be sailing toward federal consent after the Interior Department's Minerals Management Service issued a supportive environmental report in January, about eight years after the pioneering project was announced. A decision could have come 30 days later......

Wind messages blown to Obama

The Cape Cod Times

As President Barack Obama and his family flew from Cape Cod to Martha's Vineyard earlier this week, he may have looked to the east upon the water above Horseshoe Shoal. Depending on Marine One's flight path, he might have even glimpsed the data collection tower installed there by Cape Wind Associates.

For Obama, the island visit will have been the closest he has come since being elected to one of the most ferocious debates to rage across the Cape and Islands in the past decade......

As the temperature in Boston soared to 95 degrees on Tuesday afternoon and New England reached its peak electricity demand thus far this year, the proposed offshore wind farm, Cape Wind, would have supplied 300 megawatts of electricity during that crucial hour, according to data collected at Cape Wind’s Scientific Data Tower in Nantucket Sound.....

Obama Vacations In Clean-Energy Battleground

National Journal

With President Obama vacationing in Martha's Vineyard next week, local activists plan to soak up the national spotlight as the first family soaks up the sun.

Nantucket Sound, where plans to build a 130-turbine wind farm have sparked heated resistance, has become ground zero for a larger debate about offshore renewable energies. Whether the wind farm -- the first of its kind in the nation -- is a catalyst for similar projects or an impediment could be settled if the president takes sides.....

Legal scholars agree the dismissal of an appeal of a planning board decision against a residential wind turbine does not set a precedent, but local bylaws could pose a problem for future projects.

I am confused after reading of the tribal nations' objections to harvesting wind power off our local shores.

State draws zones for coast wind farms

The Boston Globe

Dozens of wind turbines could sprout within sight of the Massachusetts shoreline under a first-of-its-kind state blueprint with the promise of generating both electricity and controversy.

The draft plan, scheduled to be released today, would allow a series of small wind farms of up to 10 turbines each in coastal waters that stretch 3 miles from shore. Substantially larger farms - similar to what’s proposed in Nantucket Sound - could be built off Cape Cod near Cuttyhunk Island and adjacent to another tiny island several miles off Martha’s Vineyard.....

The Dutch are known for windmills, but it’s the Danish who now claim the world’s second-largest offshore wind farm, located in shallow but navigable waters 6 miles off the shore of the bucolic southern coastal town of Nysted. Gently rotating blades reach out more than 130 feet from their colossal 225-foot posts. Seen from the sky, the 72 sleek, marine-gray towers rise from the ocean in neat rows, marking out a parallelogram.....

Cape Wind permit considered likely

Cape Cod Times

BOSTON — Following a tentative decision by a state board yesterday, Cape Wind Associates, LLC, is poised to receive a "super permit," knocking off nine state and local approvals it needs to build 130 wind turbines in Nantucket Sound.

If formally approved, the so-called composite certificate would overturn a Cape Cod Commission procedural denial of the project. It would be second time the state Energy Facilities Siting Board has asserted its authority over the regional planning and regulatory agency in the past two years.....

BOSTON - In an apparent loss for the Cape Cod Commission, a state board today tentatively approved a “super permit” for the proposed Nantucket Sound wind farm.

If the state Energy Facilities Siting Board ultimately approves the so-called comprehensive certificate, it would overturn a Cape Cod Commission denial of the Cape Wind Associates LLC project on procedural grounds. The commission action could have halted the project.....

Salazar's support for the plan by Cape Wind Associates LLC to build 130 wind turbines in the Sound is in line with President Barack Obama's call for more energy from renewable sources. But it did not sit well with opponents of the plan yesterday.....
